Asian Food

Onigiri

Do you like Asian food? What do you know about Asian food? Asian food varies by country, race, culture and region of Asia. Asian food can be refers to East Asian such as China, Japan and Korea and also include Southeast Asia like Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia and as well as the South Asian such as Burma, Bangladesh, and India.

One of the type of Asian food that I like the most is Japanese food called Onigiri or also known as rice ball. Onigiri is made from white rice that form by hand into a triangular shape and oval shape and often wrapped by seaweed. Traditionally, the Onigiri is filled with a pickle, salted salmon or any other salty or sour ingredient. Now days, the Onigiri is very famous in Japan and has many type of filling and flavors such as mayonese, cheese, cream and others.

The History of Onigiri is written in the diary of Lady Murasaki a Japanese novelist and poetry in 11th century tells about people eating rice ball. During that time, the Onigiri were called Tonjiki, people often consumed at outdoor picnic or lunch. Other writing tells that in the 17th century, state that many samurai stored rice balls wrapped in bamboo sheath as a quick lunchtime meal during war.

The origins of Onigiri are much earlier even than Lady Murasaki. Before the use of chopsticks became widespread, in the Nara period, rice was often rolled into a small ball so that it could be easily picked up. Now, the Onigiri has become popular not only in Japan, but across the country.
